The American Festival of the Blues II, Spring 2003

April and May 2003 saw Bobby Parker Junior, Deitra Farr and Michael Roach all touring and performing with the incredible Otis Grand & the Big Blues Band.  Michael stood in at extremely short notice for the previously billed Louisiana Red, who unfortunately suffered a medical crisis and was hospitalised just a few days before the start of the tour.

Deitra received many standing ovations, Bobby's performances were excellent also, and Michael too received great receptions ... the feedback we had about the whole bill was very positive and in fact everyone on the tour thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Here's some more on the artists:

Bobby Parker Junior (vocals & guitar) from Maryland via Washington DC. He’s one of the few remaining guitarists on this planet who can pierce your heart and soothe your soul. He inspired me to play guitar” said Carlos Santana. Robert Plant said he “..started singing after hearing Parker’s “Blues Get Off My Shoulder ...” He’s written and performed with some of the best ... Sam Cooke, The Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard. This man is living R & B history.

Deitra Farr (female soul/blues singer).  Considered one of Chicago’s top vocalists. Fiery, energetic and soul stirring are just some of the words used to describe this wonderful singer. “I won’t sing a song if I don’t feel it, so whatever I’m singing about there is some truth in it somehow in my life.” Blueprint said of her ”If the blues is an international language that knows no frontiers, then it can have no finer ambassador than blues singer supreme, Deitra Farr.”

[The originally billed Louisiana Red (vocals & guitar) - see above.  He is …. “The Giant of Blues”. Born in the Deep South of the USA, Louisiana Red has lived the blues ... strongly influenced by Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins & Arthur Crudup – he long ago found his own voice, style and his own form of expression. In a career spanning half a century, he’s played with just about every major bluesman you can name – always with the same intensity and enthusiasm whether to 10,000 or 100 people].

Top UK based artists Otis Grand &the BIG Blues Band [8 piece band with brass] were the house band for the visiting US artists, and also performed their own exciting material. Influenced by Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker, Ike Turner and BB King and voted Best Blues Guitarist in Europe in 1998, Otis plays great blues with his big band line up and stunning horn section.
