Benny’s co-writer on
many of these songs was Graham Lyle. Both are
from Largs in Scotland. They came south in the Sixties
and joined The Beatles' publishing company,
Apple, as Gallagher & Lyle, writing songs for
many performers, not least Mary Hopkin - Apple Records'
most successful solo artist.
Upon
the decline of Apple the duo stayed together joining Tom McGuinness from
Manfred Mann and Hughie Flint from John
Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to form McGuinness Flint. When I'm
Dead and Gone and Malt and
Barley Blues were the band’s biggest hits. After two
albums and three singles the duo decided it was time to develop their own
careers and formed Gallagher & Lyle.
The
following years saw Gallagher & Lyle touring the world playing their
stunning album Breakaway to ever
widening audiences … it featured the wonderful singles I Wanna Stay
With You, Heart On My Sleeve and of course Breakaway. Art
Garfunkel also had a major hit single with this track.
By
1979, feeling they had exhausted possibilities both on the road and in the
studio, Benny and Graham decided to go their
separate ways. Ironically Simon & Garfunkel performed A Heart In New
York – one of the last G&L joint compositions – to a massive
audience of 500,000 in The Concert In Central
Park. Thanks to a suggestion from Paul Simon, Garth Brooks recently
repeated the compliment .... performing
A Heart In New York
to an audience of 750,000 at his Central Park
concert - making it the largest concert in the history of New York,
with simultaneous broadcasts throughout America on HBO.
Benny
continued his songwriting career in the UK, with occasional visits to
Nashville, where Don Williams gave him his first No 1 hit in the Country
Music Chart with Stay Young.
Naming just a few ...... Benny has worked with: Paul
McCartney, Mary Hopkin, Eric Clapton, The Blues Band, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie
Lane, Elkie Brooks, Sandy Denny, The Manfreds, Ralph McTell, Georgie Fame,
Jim Diamond, Andy Fairweather-Low, Don Williams
and Gary Brooker, as well as blues legends
Arthur Big Boy Cruddup and Champion Jack Dupree.
Past
years have seen Benny touring the world as bass player and vocalist with
The Manfreds. He’s still busy writing as well as touring ....
and by special request will play as a solo artist at selected Arts Centres.
1999 & 2000 saw Benny playing
bass on sell out tours throughout the UK with Dennis Locorriere the Voice
of Dr Hook.
In
2002, 10cc did a major revival tour, featuring
Benny as Special Guest with his fellow favourite
musicians Pick Withers, Mike Bell and Christian Marsac, performing all the
great hits in their set.
